While making this fitness tracker review, the most obvious difference we noticed between the two devices was their size and shape. The Surge is significantly wider than the Charge 2, and it sports a larger screen. That’s good news for those that want larger letters and numbers and more information on the screen at once, but the Charge 2 might be a better option for buyers that want a slimmer or sleeker smartwatch.
Different Screen Technology
The Fitbit Surge uses more advanced and newer OLED technology for its screen, while the Charge 2 uses a basic LCD screen. That means the Surge is a bit easier to see with sharper and crisper numbers and lines, and it’s a bit easier to look at in direct sunlight as well. Both displays are easy enough to view though, the Surge just offers a slightly better experience.
If battery life is extremely important to you, the Fitbit Surge has a slight advantage over the Charge 2. It lasts for about 7 days, compared to the 5 days offered by the Charge 2. That’s likely due to the devices larger size. The Surge likely houses a larger batter than the Charge 2 does. Either way, these devices will last for several days before you need to worry about finding an outlet.

The Fitbit Charge 2 is slightly cheaper than the Surge, but the difference isn’t a huge one. At this time the two devices are separated by about $20. That means that the features and form-factor should control your purchase decision more than the price difference of these devices.
Both Smartwatches Will get the Job Done

Each of these two watches has relatively accurate heart rate tracking for you to take advantage of. While they won’t work as accurately as chest-strap heart rate monitors, they can help you keep track of your workout and figure out when you should be pushing harder or reigning back your work.
One major advantage that the Fitbit Surge has over the Charge 2 is built-in GPS tracking. This advanced device will let you know how far you’ve traveled, how much of an elevation change you’ve gone through and more important stats related to GPS tracking than the Charge 2 can do on its own. For GPS tracking on the Charge 2 you must carry around a smartphone and have them connected during your workouts. Some people won’t care about this, but for others the Surge is the obvious choice.

Finally, both of these smartwatches work well enough for keeping track of what’s going on on your connected smartphone. If you want a good solid tracker that’s going to let you know what text messages you have, when an alarm is going off, what events you have coming up or let you change the song on your playlist, these trackers will do the job.
Both the Fitbit Surge and Charge 2 are capable devices, which makes the task to compare smartwatches like these even more difficult. If you are thinking of buying one or the other, you really need to look at their few differences to help you make your final decision. If you want a bigger screen, or a sharper display, or built-in GPS tracking the Surge makes sense. If you’re after a sleeker profile or longer battery life, or a slightly cheaper purchase price, the Charge 2 stands out as the more obvious option.
